This summer the Art & Design Department will be running an exciting project with year 7 about architecture, which will include the chance to work with professional architects in school, but also to respond creatively to the history of our school buildings.
As well as people, buildings can house memories, especially when a building is an important part of the local community like our school is. So for this project, as well as creating artworks that show their understanding of architecture, pupils will be creating work that documents the school buildings and the memories they and others have of them.
To begin with we will be focusing on West Block, the building closest to the road. This is the oldest part of the school and the building to be demolished first in preparation for our expected rebuild later this year.
Do you have any specific memories of West Block you would be happy to share with us? it could be: - friendships made or broken - an exam or test that went very well or very badly - something hilariously funny or strange - memories of a particular teacher or lesson - a life changing conversation or event - something very boring and mundane ...or it could be just words to describe the building, what it looked like to you as a pupil, how it felt to be there, noises, smells or anything else!
Year 7 pupils will be using your memories to inspire their own creative writing and art & design work. We are planning a public art exhibition later this summer (date to be announced) to share their work with the local community and to celebrate the history of our West Block - come along and see if your memory has been transformed into an artwork!
