Health & Social Care

In KS4, pupils can opt to study an OCR Cambridge National in Health and Social Care.

The Cambridge National in Health and Social Care introduces pupils to the specialist knowledge and skills needed to work in various care settings. Underpinning the qualification is a focus on core values and communicating with individuals so as to maintain their dignity and sense of being valued, skills important to a multitude of career paths.
Pupils cover a wide variety of topics across four units. Mandatory units include an externally examined unit - Essential Values of Care with Individuals in Care Settings. To complete the other three units pupils produce a portfolio of coursework.  Coursework tasks are tiered so that pupils work to their own academic level and achieve their full potential.

Topics covered throughout the course include:
R021: Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings
Here pupils learn about the rights of individuals and the values of care required when working in a health, social care or early years environment. Through role play and case studies they gain understanding of how to apply these values so that individuals’ dignity is maintained.

R022: Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings
In this unit pupils explore different types of communication. They learn about the importance of effective communication to connect with individuals using care services, and they develop their understanding of how the way they communicate impacts on an individual’s care.

R027: Creative activities to support individuals in health, social care and early years settings
Pupils explore the various types of creative activities available in the sector and how they can be used to meet individuals’ needs and enhance their enjoyment and personal value. They plan and carry out an activity with either an individual or a group.

R031: Using basic first aid procedures
Pupils find out about basic first aid procedures that might be required in a health or social care setting, including how to carry out basic first aid on adults. They learn how to assess the scene of an accident for further risks and what information they need to communicate when contacting the emergency services.
