The Birmingham Civic Society's Next Generation Awards scheme has been running for twelve years and worked with over 26,500 young people. Each year approximately 20 Birmingham Schools participate.
The award scheme is an assessed project-based programme for 11-14 year-olds. It is an inclusive project which is great for developing pupils' skills in team-working, ICT, presentation, creative writing and problem solving, and to help the pupils in Birmingham to become active citizens that contribute positively to future of our city. At Turves Green Girls’ School, we ran the project across the whole of Year 7 with many groups coming up with fantastic ideas for projects that could make a difference to both pupils at our school and beyond in the community. The winning group from our school were ‘The Healthy Hunters’, a group of six pupils who wanted to run a healthy eating and exercise club after school. Their idea and presentation was excellent and saw them beating off competition from 15 schools in the semi-finals to reach the final on Thursday 5th October at Royal Bank of Scotland in Brindley Place, Birmingham. The girls gave a fantastic presentation to the judges on the night and, although they were not judged as being the winners of the night, staff and parents alike were extremely proud of them and their achievement. Here are the team celebrating their Success. Well done Girls!
