Sporting Success

Our fantastic PE department ensures that all students are given the opportunity to shine in sports and games, and our girls have been particularly successful when competing in netball and indoor and outdoor athletics.

Here is Mrs Turner's report on the 2014/15 season.

Indoor Athletics

DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS-COLMERS SCHOOL, 27th JANUARY 2015

Year 7 and 8 competed in the Level 2 District Championships on the above date (there are no District championships for Year 9). Both teams performed really well on the day, winning most events in each age group. Year 7 and 8 were both selected to represent the District at the All Birmingham Final at the NIA

Both the Year 7 and Year 8 teams competed in the above event, representing the District as District Champions. There were some very good individual results and in the team competitions. There are 78 secondary schools in Birmingham and 12 had qualified for this final.
The team results were :-

YEAR 8 – ALL BIRMINGHAM CHAMPIONS!

YEAR 7 – 4th ALL BIRMINGHAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Although the 7 girls were upset to narrowly miss out on a medal, their performances were excellent. (Very few points separated the top 4).

SANDWELL INDOOR LEAGUE 2014-15

Teams from year 7, 8, and 9 have competed in this league throughout the winter with 6 competitions in total. It is a very strong league with 9 teams in each age group. Many of the schools have club athletes who compete regularly for their clubs out of school.
The performances throughout have been outstanding, both from individuals and from the team as a whole. Results were as follows :-
  • Year 7: 2nd overall
  • Year 8: 2nd overall
  • Year 9: 2nd overall

Netball

KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL LEAGUES

Another good season from Turves Green Netball teams in the District leagues. Year 9 were undefeated, Year 8 lost only 1 game and Year 7 lost 2 only games; final league positions as follows : -
  • Year 9 – 1st Division 2
  • Year 8 – 2nd Division 1
  • Year 7 – 3rd Division 1

KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL TOURNAMENTS

Year 9 District Tournament, Wednesday 25th February 2015 :
4th Place

In the District tournament the Year 9 team had to play against 3 teams from Division 1 (They have played in Division 2 this season) They did well to reach the semi- final. Unfortunately they lost to Colmers on the ‘Golden Goal’ ruling. It was all square at the end of the Semi Final 6-6. The game was restarted after Colmers won the toss up and took the first centre pass. The team to score the next goal would win. As Colmers had the first centre pass they scored from it and went through to the Final. Unfortunately, they then lost narrowly to Edgbaston High in the 3rd and 4th play-off. However, still a good season for year 9, so well done overall.

Year 8 District Tournament, Wednesday 4th March 2015

The year 8 team have had a very good season finishing 2nd in a very strong Division 1. Some matches throughout the league season were won by just 1 or 2 goals, so this was always going to be a difficult and closely contested tournament.

On arrival we found that 4 of the top 5 teams were all in our section! As a result we lost 2 games very narrowly and didn't qualify for the Semi Final. However, still an excellent season for Year 8 finishing 2nd in Division 1 of the District league.

Well done to all the players.

Year 7 District Tournament, Wednesday 18th March: 2nd Place

The Year 7 team have done well in their first season, finishing 3rd in the 1st Division of the District League and losing only 2 games. At the District tournament, they found themselves playing the 2 teams they had lost to in the league. Firstly Kings Norton Girls were beaten in the first round of section games (Kings Norton won 13-7 in the league game), This helped Year 7 qualify for the Semi Final. Then they beat Edgbaston High in the Semi Final (Edgbaston had won 11-4 in the league game). Unfortunately, Turves lost the Final, to an excellent King Edwards Camp Hill team, who are also ranked 2nd in the County.

So well done to the Year 7 for finishing runners up in the District tournament. A great end to a good first season.

COUNTY NETBALL TOURNAMENTS

The standard of play at these tournaments is always very high, with nearly all the other teams having a high percentage of club players within their teams. There are 78 Secondary schools in Birmingham County.

This year, the organisers commented that Turves Green are the only non independent school to compete in this tournament every year and they were impressed with the ability and attitude of all our teams.

Year 9 County Netball Tournament
Monday 10th November 2014 Edgbaston High School

The Year 9 team played very well in this tournament and narrowly failed to get to the Semi Final on goal difference. If they had scored one more goal or let one less goal in, they would have gone through. Edgbaston High went through, even though we had beaten them in the first round. They eventually won the tournament and went on to play in the National Schools Tournament. This shows how narrow the margins were - this time it was just 1 goal that prevented the Year 9 team going through! They eventually finished in the top 6 in the County, which is a great achievement.

Year 8 County Netball Tournament
Monday 23rd March 2015 Sutton Girls Grammar School

The Year 8 team made a good effort in this tournament, but a couple of the girls were injured or unwell at crucial times and they ended up losing 2 games by 1 goal. Therefore they did not make it through to the semi final. However, they would be well capable of progressing through in the future and competed well with all the private and independent schools that were in the tournament. They also still managed to finish in the top 8 in the whole of Birmingham.

Year 7 County Netball Tournament
Wednesday 11th March 2015 Sutton Girls Grammar School

Once again, the Year 7 team from Turves Green had a tough draw. There were 6 teams in their section and 4 of the best teams in the tournament were all in our section, including the eventual winners. The girls competed well, and although they drew 1 and lost 4, three of the games lost could easily have been won. They still managed to finish in the top 10 in the whole of Birmingham.

Well done everyone!
