Our fantastic PE department ensures that all students are given the opportunity to shine in sports and games, and as seems to usually be the case our girls have been particularly successful when competing in netball and indoor and outdoor athletics.
Here is Mrs Turner's report on the 2016/17 season.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS-COLMERS SCHOOL, 7th DECEMBER 2016
Year 7 competed in the Level 2 District Championships on the above date. It was an EXTREMLY CLOSE competition. Originally, we were told we had come 2nd to Colmers, by 3 points. However, after a RECOUNT of points the next day, we were told we had in fact won by 4 points! Therefore we were District Champions and would go on to represent the District at the All Birmingham Championships in February.
1st places x 7 2nd places x 6 3rd places x 6
Year 8also competed in the Level 2 District Championships on the above date. It was another CLOSE competition. The team finished 4th, but there were not many points separating the top 4 teams Out of 8 team events on the day, we had the following results:-
1st places x 1 2nd places x 6 3rd places x 2
It was the 1st time we had not won the District Championships since the 2008-9 season-A great record in itself. Therefore for the first time in 9 years, we did not go on, to represent the District at the All Birmingham Final.
ALL BIRMINGHAM FINAL 14th FEBRUARY 2017 - DOUG ELLIS SPORTS CENTRE
The Year 7 teams competed in the above event, representing the District as District Champions. There were some very good individual results. In this team competitions there are 78 secondary schools in Birmingham who compete and 12 had qualified for this final as Champions for their own Districts.
The Year 7 Girls team From Turves green Girls finished in 7th place in a close competition, with not many points between the top teams. The Year 7 team from Turves Green Boys finished in 8th place
SANDWELL INDOOR LEAGUE 2016-17 - Team competition results
Teams from year 7, 8 and 9 have competed in this league throughout the winter with 6 competitions in total. It is a very strong league with 10/11 teams in each age group. Many of the schools have club athletes who compete regularly for their clubs out of school.
The performances throughout have been outstanding, both from individuals and from the team as a whole. Results were as follows :-
YEAR 7 & 8 2nd Overall YEAR 7, 8 & 9 – Combined 4th Overall (Amazing as Year 9 did not compete in 4 out of the 6 competitions!)
BEST ATHLETES AWARDS
With 9 schools of between 6-8 athletes, there are approx. 54-72 individuals competing in each age group. Bronze, Silver and Gold medals were awarded to the individuals who gained the most points over the 6 competitions. We won 2 of the 3 medals for Year 7 :- 1st Clarrie Willaims, 3rd Kiera Rutter. Also Jessico Nkuso was presented with an award for outstanding effort and contribution to her team.
Well done to all the athletes for some brilliant performances this season. The success of our teams has once again been a great team effort.
Netball KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL LEAGUES
Turves Green have continued to do well in the District Leagues this year.
The Senior team won their league and were undefeated wining every game.
KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL TOURNAMENT
Senior District Tournament, Shenley Academy - Tuesday 21st March 2017
The Senior Team played 7 matches in their District Tournament at Shenley Academy. Most of the time they played in the rain and freezing cold wind. They were in a tough group and had to play some excellent teams including King Edwards 5 Ways and Kings Norton Girls who reached the National Finals last year. They only lost to Kings Norton 8-4 and the game was closer than the score suggests. Goal Attack, Lois Tipping was injured in the 2nd game v KE5W, having a nasty fall. However, she bravely carried on with numerous cuts and bruises, for another 3 games before she had a similar fall and was unable to play the final 3 games, this was a big loss to the team. Turves Green ended up playing off for 5th and 6th place - they completely dominated the game, but couldn’t convert their chances into goals. They ended up losing by one goal and so finished in 6th place.
KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL LEAGUE
YEAR 9 - 1st
The Year 9 team was undefeated, winning every game apart from one which was drawn. The game they drew was against an excellent team from King Edwards Five Ways and the score was 17-17. However, King Edwards lost another game to St Thomas Aquinas, which resulted in Turves Green becoming District Champions. An excellent achievement for a Year 9 squad that contained 4 x Year 8 players and 1 x Year 7 player. It was sad to see Goal Shooter, Maysa Durrani 9W leave Turves Green (for the second time!) to take up a place at Hodge Hill Girls. She had been player of the match nearly every game, scoring many vital goals at important times. She also made several appearances in the Senior team and also won player of the match in those games! She will be sorely missed!
Note: There was no Year 7 or 8 teams in the District League this season, but as noted above Year 7 & 8 girls were part of the Year 9 squad
LINDEN NETBALL CLUB OPEN TOURNAMENT - WEDNESDAY 29th MARCH 2017 SENIOR TEAM - THIRD PLACE
The standard of play at this tournament was very high including 2 excellent teams in King Edwards Handsworth and King Edwards Camp Hill. Most of the players in each of these teams play for Netball clubs out of school. It just so transpired that Turves Green had to play each of these teams twice. Unfortunately, all 4 of these games were lost. The Senior team improved with every game and in the second round of these games showed that they were capable of beating both these teams. The scores were very close and they only lost to the winners of the Tournament by 4 goals. Having dominated most of the game, they were unable to convert their MANY interceptions and shots into goals. However, they should take great encouragement from these later performances.
This was the last Netball competition for the Year 11 girls before they leave. These girls are - Carly Cook, Elise Burton, Ruth Solademi and Sade Beckford. It has been great to see the progression of these girls since Year 7 and I have enjoyed coaching them. I hope they continue to play when they leave school either for College or for a local club team.
SOUTH BIRMINGHAM CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016-17
At Shenley Academy on Wednesday 28th September 2017, Year 7 and Year 8 girls ran in the 2016-2017 Championships in 2 different age groups-Under 12 and Under 14. Unfortunately, there were no Under 16 girls running as there was a clash with a Netball fixture.
Turves Green Girls finished 3rd as a team in the Under 12 age group. This is an excellent result as there were some high quality runners from the other schools, who also run for clubs outside school. Maisie lewis and Sophie Curzey finished in the top 10 and were selected to run for South Birmingham District in the West Midlands County Championships. These took place in October 2016 and January 2017.
In the Under 14 age group, Millie Piper ran very well against a high quality field finishing 13th out of 48 runners taking part.

SPORTS AMBASSADORS 2016-17
Sophie Bullock and Amy Tiller (Year 10s) I would like to thank the 2 students above, for all the help they have given me over the last school year. They have helped coach lower school Netball players and both the Indoor and Outdoor Athletics teams. They have been to practices and competitions and I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort they have given. Your help has been very much appreciated. Mrs Turner
