Our fantastic PE department continues to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to shine in sports and games. This year has been no exception, particularly for Indoor Athletics, where we became All Birmingham Champions for Year 7 and finished 3rd in Year 8. Here is Mrs Turner's report on the 2018/19 season.
DISTRICT LEVEL2 CHAMPIONSHIPS - TURVES GREEN BOYS SCHOOL 6th DECEMBER 2018
Year 7 competed brilliantly as a team in the above Championships. They won by 27 points- an amazing margin and the best ever for a Year 7 team, since I have been coaching the teams at Turves Green. Therefore, they were District Champions and will represent the District at the Level 3 All Birmingham Championships in March 2019.
Out of 11 Track and Field events, we won 9 and came 2nd in one and 3rd in the other. What a great achievement.
Well Done to everyone in the squad it was a fantastic team effort
Year 8 also competed brilliantly in the Level 2 District Championships on the above date. They also had the best ever winning margin for a Year 8 team – 32 points. As District Champions, they will represent the District, at the Level 3 All Birmingham Final in March 2019.
Out of 11 Track and Field events, we won 11. This is an amazing achievement and the best winning margin since I have been coaching the teams at Turves Green.
Well Done to everyone in the squad it was a real team effort
INDOOR ATHLETICS 2018-19 - ALL BIRMINGHAM FINAL - YEAR 7 & 8
The Year 7 & 8 teams competed in the above event as District Champions. Between 60-80 schools will have entered this competition at District level. Only the District champions were competing in the Final. There were some great Individual performances which resulted in the following Team positions:-
Year 7 – All Birmingham Champions! Year 8 – 3rd Place
Well done to all the Athletes below that competed- amazing achievements to beat so many other Birmingham Districts
KINGS NORTON DISTRICT NETBALL LEAGUES
The Final position for Year 7 has been recently confirmed as District League Champions! The Year 8 team won the District league Division 2 last season and were promoted to Division 1, where the standard is very high. The first half of the season proved hard, but the second half of the season was better and managed to beat a very good Edgbaston High team. The final league position was 3rd Equal

BIRMINGHAM COUNTY NETBALL TOURNAMENTS
Year 7 - The team didn’t manage to win a game, but all games were well contested and all losing margins were small. They finished 6th in their section on the day. Year 8 - The girls won their first game, but struggled in the remaining games losing 3 of them very narrowly. They finished 4th in their section.
Year 8 2nd Tournament - The team played very well at this tournament wining 4 out of 5 games in their group. (Lost to Edgbaston High, the eventual winners). They narrowly lost both the Semi Final to King Edwards Camp Hill and the 3rd & 4th playoff, to Kings Norton Girls. Both games were very close and the girls finished in 4th place.

SOUTH BIRMINGHAM CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018-19 Shenley Academy Wednesday 3rd October 2018
There were some outstanding results at the District Cross Country Championships on the 3rd October 2018. Out of the 12 runners above, 8 were selected to compete for the District at the West Midlands County Championships.
Year 7 (Under 12), became District Team Champions. Year 8 & 9 combined team (Under 14) finished 3rd in the team event.
Well done to everyone, especially the Year 7 team, whose results were the best ever.
Also- Thank you to Mrs Miller, who took the girls to the competition, as I was unable to attend.
SOUTH BIRMINGHAM DISTRICT TRIALS FOR THE WEST MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIPS 23rd MAY 2019
There were some outstanding performances at the South Birmingham District Athletics trials in May. As a result 6 girls went on to represent the District in the West Midlands County Championships at Alexander Stadium on the 8th June. The results of their performances are above. Ellie-Mae Devine achieved the highest finishing position of 2nd in the Year 7 Girls Discus.

COUNTY PERFORMANCES WEST MIDLANDS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019
There are over 200 schools in the West Midlands and it was a great achievement for 6 of our girls to be selected to represent the District of South Birmingham in the West Midlands Championships. It was a day when the rain was pouring down all day, but it didn’t stop the girls performing well.
KING EDWARDS FIVE WAYS TRIATHLON EVENTS 23rd May 2019
These 2 competitions included teams of 4 with all athletes competing in 3 different events. Heptathlon scoring tables were used for results in each event. There was a TEAM competition and an INDIVIDUAL competition.

SOUTH BIRMINGHAM CUP Thursday 4th July 2019 Years 7,8,9 & 10
Congratulations to the Outdoor Athletics teams from Years 7,8,9 & 10 who finished a CLOSE 2nd to King Edwards Five Ways in the South Birmingham Cup. The team competition was close from the very start, with just a few centimetres or tenths of a second separating the 2 schools in a number of events.
LEVEL 2 DISTRICT ATHLETICS TEAM COMPETITION QUALIFIER FOR THE ALL BIRMINGHAM GAMES FINAL Tuesday July 2nd 2019 YEAR 7 & YEAR 8
The Year 7 team performed really and had a very close competition with King Edwards Five Ways. The scores were so close there were 2 recounts. King Edwards won by 4 points and it was they who qualified for the All Birmingham Final.
The Year 8 team also performed well finishing 2nd overall. However, an outstanding St Thomas Aquinas team beat them and qualified for the All Birmingham Final.

Thank you to Lucy Buckley, who has helped with the Indoor Athletics teams during the school year.
I would like to particularly thank Emmie Field 10B, for all the help she has given to me in 3 different sports over the last school year. She has helped to coach lower school Netball players and both the Indoor Athletics and Outdoor Athletics teams.
